Heavy Hearts

This old gal has been around for a long time. I have outlived many of my students! And I can truthfully say that I have never seen so many people with depression and heavy hearts. You turn on the t.v. and you get 99 1/2 % bad news. You try to change the channel to something light and cheerful (such as Jon and Kate Plus 8) and find that the news media has ruined that program, too. I joined Netflix, hoping that picking out my own movies might be a plus, with nothing forced on me, but many of the Netflix movies are not closed captioned and I send them back without viewing the full movie.

True, we deafies are so much better off than we were 50 years ago when counting our new conveniences. I often count my blessings.

Personally I find a great deal of comfort in my backyard with my flowers. When a big windstorm comes my way and flattens the Lupins, I tell myself that they will come back next year. I smile when I see the many lady bugs and give a sigh of relief when I see the bees doing their job. Mother Nature is grand!

When I am relaxing (when!) my two cats take their places on my lap and often Lenny my Solomon Island Eclectus parrot will join us. Lenny is the boss and the cats do not dare step out of line or they get a fat lip!

Until next time ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

  1. Hey Lantana,

Mind if you can share the situation about CC issue? I mean, we have been member of Netflix since 2003 and to be quite honest, I would say about at least 7 times in past 6 years that I sent them back due to no CC and subtitles.

Did you also check if they have subtitle other than just CC? Some DVDs have both available. Some only have one or the other.

I only select ones that states do have CC and/or Subtitles available which can be found on front page of netflix movie profile.

As for negative situations, I couldn't agree with you more. I can't stand it either. Too many negative topics, talks and such especially I have seen a lot of negative on FB and even comments on my site every now and then.

It gets OLD, no question about it. I must admit, I was once being very negative person way back in my 20's and younger so I'm just grateful how much I have changed and be more positive. Life is short! People should at least appreciate for everything in their lives and enjoy every possible way like I do and think positive.

Things, indeed, do get better over years so that's something to look at.

Hope to see you again one of these days!!

    Hugs

  2. Hi Lantana,
It's so nice to see you posting. It's true about the subtitles. Most the time they have English, but I always check, especially if its an Independently made film or one filmed in the UK. Lately I've been doing a lot of reading. Just discovered a wonderful book by Willa Cather. My Antonia. Sometimes reading is so much better than a movie.

Can't believe your broccoli is doing so well already. I haven't had much luck with broccoli. Peas are finally flowering though.

  3. Unfortunately bad news gets attention and sells papers (old saying) while good news is considered too boring. One has to work at finding sources of good news these days, usually get it from the closest neighbors.

I stopped ordering Netflix films and instead spend the money on TV series box sets such as NYPD Blue, the Commish and similar DVDs with a human touch. Many movies nowadays overemphasize violent action and not enough on a story line.

Clubbing, volunteer work, blogging, visiting and corresponding is especially rewarding at our age and when it's with young people it's fun. Did you teach at some time before?

  5. What a lovely response, thankyou guys and dolls (well, one guy, anyway). Geo I suspect that you and I might have a slight difference in taste in movies. I guess I better switch with you. Direz: I was a Student Life Counselor for 25 years, plus I taught ASL for the local community college (where I lived then). Going deaf at age 10 turned me into a bookworm and I never was able to enjoy T.V. until the old Sears Decoders came out, and so I am still enjoying t.v., kind of like "coming out of the closet" if you know what I mean. Kim: Broccoli is planted in March, it is a cold weather crop, so it ripens early, Fish ferilizer helps, too.

I belong to Paperback Swap, that site is amazing and I have received so many nice books, including hard covers and gardening books. I try and save those for wintertime when we have 135 mph winds beating at the house. I tend towards biographies and true crime. Methinks I am going to have to quit the true crime stories, too depressing!

Yes, LaRonda Lenny is one of a kind, he is almost human. Both cats fear him. However BG, Joe's barn cat brought me a dead bird the other day, kind of like warning me not to let my guard down too much. She was so proud of that bird and crept off when I told her she was a bad girl!

  6. I forgot to mention that I worked at Woodstock House during the summer months and some weekends. It (was) a group home for emotionally disturbed deaf adults and was housed in a former convent. I learned more there than I ever could out of a book, I think! Unfortunately the DVR cut off their funding so the place had to be closed. I loved that type of work! I have stories to tell!

  7. Hi, Lantana.

I am really out of practice with deafvideo since I read the blog I have not read it and catch up and very behind until your blog. It is remind me of old close captions. I am thinking about freecycle to give away old captions. It might be not worth to check on it. I am not quiet sure about that.

www.freecycle.org It did help me lot of save money.. but old close capitions is working but misused it.
