I have enjoyed reading about a few deaf peoples' embarrassing moments. I can imagine that being who we are, and with the disabilities that we have, those moments come quite often for most of us.
Quite a few years ago when I was teaching Sign Language at the local community college, I had a very nice person in my class who spoke up often and asked intelligent and interesting questions. When referring to this person I always said "He" and pointed to "him". Well this went on for sometime, finally during a break, one of the other members of the class took me aside and told me that "that person" was a FEMALE. I responded with, "Are you sure?" and she replied yes, that she played on the women's basket ball team!
'Not being able to hear the young woman's voice really got me into an awkward situation!

Ouch! Yeah embarassing! Its very true how hearing people have added advantage in determining sex of a person based on their speech! Heh!
ReplyDeleteThese days, it is harder to know what gender the other person is in a world of unisex haircuts and clothing.
ReplyDeleteSometimes it helps to look at the hands and shoes! Mens' are larger in relation to their height than women.
Geez! It is hard to tell if the person is male or female.. quite funny.. Thank you for a share.. It is really confusion and embrassment!
ReplyDeleteHi Lantana. Nice to see you blogging again. You brought a smile to my face with your brief post here. True, you just never know the gender of some people these days.
ReplyDeleteHugs.

Hi Lantana,
ReplyDeleteI must agree that it is not easy to identify the gender of some people in the 21st century. I guess that girls bruise much less than guys -- you lucky, smile. By the way, it is good to see you again.
Sure, you brought a smile to my face, too! I flirted with one young guy when I was 16, but I didn't know that he was SHE.
