Sick Pets

We are all terribly concerned when our pets become ill. I think that pets hold a special place in a deafie's heart, perhaps it is the unabashed love they give us, no matter if we have strange voices or speak a "different" language!

Our Solomon Island Eclectus parrot, Lenny has been under the weather. So I drove the 160 miles round trip, over the mountains and through the snow to the only Avian vet within 200 miles. My usual avian vet has retired and now I have a woman doctor, with a slight Asian accent of some kind. We did okay and she was willing to write anything down that I did not completely understand.

Lenny (a male!) has a "yeast" infection. Hmmm. Stool cultures were taken as well as blood tests. His blood showed a high white count suggesting an infection somewhere in his body. So we have been doing a regiment of antibiotics. 'Ever give a large beaked bird oral meds? Owie! After a great deal of thought, I went to my online parrot forum and asked for advice. They told me to mix his meds with a little peanut butter on bread. Bing0! Vet: $329.00 Parrot forum: No charge.
Not only that, but the forum of parrot lovers also taught me that if I place a tiny amount of UNFILTERED apple cider vinegar in his drinking water each time I change it, that will control any future "yeast" infections.

  1. Sorry to hear about Lenny....Our pets had gone through that cost us almost a thousand bucks last year. Our cat swallowed a dime in May of last year and the vet had to tear up her belly to get it out and our dog had been diagnosed with an autoimmune disease after series of tests. They are ourn babies.
