I am presuming that there are many deafies here who attend a monthly or bi-monthly gathering, be it at Starbucks or some other coffeehouse. I am looking for information and ideas. Any feedback will be very much appreciated.
Since we live in a resort community where deafies frequently come to vacation, I thought it would be wonderful to have our group published on DeafChatCoffee. This way, the vacationers will know where to find us at a certain time. ' Choosing the right location is not easy and of course you cannot satisfy everyone no matter how hard to try.
So far I have not been able to choose the right location, the right time of day or the day of the week. Someone always whines. One fellow was upset because there was no t.v. to watch football games on. Others said that the time (2:00 p.m.) was too late, others said it was too early. And on it goes.
Keep in mind that a night life here on the Coast can be complicated because of the weather which can change without notice. So we prefer to do our socializing in the daytime. Deafies come from all over to our gatherings, as far as 60 miles one way, so we want a nice place where we feel comfortable and accepted.
What I would like to know is how other deaf persons have solved the different issues of having a DeafChatCoffee.

Hi, it's me again. :-)
ReplyDeleteMy Deaf friends down where I live had the same problem about 4-6 months ago. There was nothing orginized where they, and interpreting students like myself, could just get together and chat.
However, a woman in the interpreting program, who is Deaf herself (hard of hearing), got fed up with having no where to meet. So she orginized the Medina Deaf Coffee Chat - and it's been growing steadily for months - last time we met (we meet the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of every month) we had over 20 people. And an article in the Plain Dealer was printed about us and the woman who wrote the article wants us to inform her of anything happening in the Deaf Community so she can get a story out and inform people of different situation! We are all very excited...
Anyway, I guess my point in all this is - would you like me to contact my friend and ask her if she'd be willing (or more likely if she'd have the time) to share her experience of putting the Coffee Chat together?
I'm sure she'd love to. :-)
Considering that I have been doing this for 16 years, perhaps I missed something? Sure, by all means, call in your friend.
ReplyDeleteI think the "Ole Deaf Club" had the right idea. It was "take it or leave it" and if the deafies wanted a social life that is where they had to go. I heard plenty of complaints back in those days of the clubs, but everyone showed up like clockwork!
Cost is a deterrent also. Not everyone can afford these coffee cabanas and I am against the deaf just sitting there and not purchasing anything. Maybe we should try McDonalds!
Lantana
McDonalds is a good idea, (chuckle).
